Introduction

Glacier Boats of Alaska is proud to announce do-it-yourself (DIY) build plans for the introduction of the Great Alaskan series of boats ...25 to 28-1/2 feet LOA, efficient, seaworthy, roomy, yet still trailerable without a special permit. They are all based upon the same hull, but have different cuddies, pilot houses, and arrangements (Prince Rupert - upper left, Newport - upper right, Rockport - lower left, Prince Rupert / Newport arrangements lower right.)   Basic specifications below...

Plans for the 26' Great Alaskan series of boats (buildable from 25' to 28' LOA) are now available so that you too can build your own hand-crafted boat, no special craftsmanship or tools required.

 Current status...

1. We receive a lot of requests for current status, builds, completed photos and the like ...Well folks, this is a new boat, a new design.  The design is based on a time-proven hull form (offshore sea skiff with moderate V-hull) and does not push any design limits of any kind.  The construction method is the same as the Tolman Skiff, but has been increased in strength appropriately for a boat this size.
2. The design has been design-checked by an independent professional naval architect at our expense.
3. The mechanical engineering has been verified/validated by a professional mechanical engineer with experience in far more complex projects than anything I will design!
4. More boats are coming ...a 16' pirogue, a 17' to 22' freighter style pirogue, a fast-build 17' to 22' lake and bay boat, and a couple of cargo-capable (4-wheelers plus a moose and gear) flat-bottomed river boats, suitable for Alaskan usage for fun and hunting/fishing.

 Incentive Program

In order to encourage the building and launching of the first Great Alaskan, we are offering the following incentives ...photos required for each step:  

1. $500 goes to the first person to complete the boat to the point where the hull is turned upright.
2. $500 and an on-site visit by me goes to the first person to launch the boat, regardless of level of finish at the time, as long as what is built in the boat is a reasonable approximation of the final arrangements.  The visit implies that I will fly to the builder's launching location (50 US states or Canada), accompany and document the launch, will perform verification and validation testing, and will of course partake in the launch celebrations!
3. Regardless of where you are on your project, we offer to maintain project pages and photo galleries for your project.  The build forum will be introduced as soon as a builder or two starts sending me updates on their project.

• Basic hull weight: 2200# to 2700# (Depending upon house/cuddy and arrangements)
• Normal displacement range: 3300# to 6000#, 3800# typical
• Recommended power: Sterndrive or outboard, 650# to 1050# (approximately 150 hp to 200 hp, 160 to 175 hp ideal)
• Recommended propulsion: Single or twin outboards or sterndrive
• Most efficient speed: 19 kts (22 mph)
• Maximum speed: 38 kts (44 mph)
• Fuel tankage: 120 US gallons (typical)
• Expected fuel efficiency: 522 nautical miles per 120 gallons of fuel
• Roomy cuddy, room for stand-up head, galley, storage, and dining area (see study plans)
• Available in 3 models (1 primary hull design, 3 cuddy / pilot house combinations available, instructions for 25' through 28-1/2 feet LOA)
